Classing Up the Joint

Posted by Justin Kubatko on April 25, 2008

You may have noticed that most of the SR sites have a shiny new logo in the upper left-hand corner. We had been talking about getting nice logos for years, but the formation of the LLC this past December finally gave us the boost to actually get something done. In fact, when we got together at the Baseball Winter Meetings to sign the documents that offically formed the LLC, we met a graphic designer by the name of John Hartwell. John runs a company named Hartwell Studio Works. He has done a lot of sports-related work, including designing the logo of the Birmingham Barons, a minor league baseball team. We have been extremely impressed with John, not only with the finished product, but also with the professionalism he displayed throughout the process.

Our hope is that these new logos further unify the sites. We want people of to think of our web sites as parts of a whole, not distinct entities, and we believe these logos are an important step in that process. Please feel free to let us know what you think (you're never shy about that, are you?), and as always we thank you for your support of our sites.

Hey, I like the move to the new logos. Slight quibble, though...I might not have put the hyphen in the top line next to the sport name.

Anyway, I love what I've seen from hockey-reference so far, with the highlight being seeing component plus/minus on the Internet for the first time. Congratulations! If only there were enough space to show the net GF and GA numbers, rather than having to compute them in my head...

Very cool logo. The football one is pretty nice too.

As for the dash, tough call either way. The one thing that it does is draw your attention to it, and therefore, keeps your eyes to go to the second line (to see what the continuation is). Otherwise, it's just "hockey" standing out, with no real reason to go to the second line.

(Presuming of course that this logo will be used for marketing elsewhere, since, we already know the URL of the site we are on.)

So, I think the decision was a good one.

Back to the puck logo, is that a puck with a net? Do you have alternatives that you went through? A puck/stick combination would be interesting to see.

The dash is important, as we don't own basketballreference.com nor sportsreference.com.

That's not a net on the puck. I think it's just a mark to make the puck come "alive" a bit. (Don't ask me, I'm not an artist. But I think it looks good.)

Great website. Two comments. It's Mark Howe, not Marty How who was a 3 time 1st team all star. And the WHA should be treated as an equal to the NHL, not some inferior league. They had Howe, Hull, Gretzky, Hedbert, Nilsson, and many others. Messier, Goulet, Gartner all started there. It wasn't a minor league.
    Ace site

I hopw that you can add the players nicknames to their career stats. Hockey probably has the best ones
